The Woodenfish Foundation is developing a new on-going volunteer program based in Ningbo city (south of Shanghai), China called Woodenfish Internation Study Exchange – or WISE.

The location is set in a vacant Chan Buddhist monastic style building owned by an active monastery in the vicinity which houses 15 monastics. The aim of this study exchange is to facilitate and encourage intercultural and interfaith dialogue between Chinese people and English-speaking people from all over the world, and to give an opportunity for volunteers to immerse themselves in Chinese language, culture and most particularly Chan Buddhism. Our first language exchange program is starting on October 1st 2016 and the intensive course will last for 6 weeks.

However, Woodenfish will warmly welcome any volunteers at any time who wish to spend time volunteering on the various projects and to engage Chinese youth in English to help them practice the language. Woodenfish doesn’t charge any fees and costs for attending this program, room & board while volunteering and three meals a day are provided by the generous host temple and donors – in exchange for volunteer work. Volunteers will only need to cover their own visa and travel expenses to and from Ningbo, China.

If you’re interested to become part of a brand new experimental volunteer program which might grow significantly in the future, do not hesitate to contact us! You only need to reach the temple by yourselves, afterwards you’ll have nothing to worry about and you’ll more than likely have an experience of a lifetime!
